This is an individual assignment. You are required to upload a single report to CANVAS and please be advised to note down the Submission ID as acknowledgement of submission. Submission ID is the ONLY proof of submission, especially in the event of technical failure.

Submission via Canvas mobile app is not supported.

Multiple submissions are allowed before the cut-off date. All assignments are to be submitted via T/TG group in CANVAS. Please ensure that you have submitted the assignment to the correct folder. Re-submission is NOT allowed after the cut-off date (including the grace period). Only the latest submission copy will be considered for grading. Any appeals for resubmission after the cut-off date will not be entertained.

The university’s prevailing mark deduction scheme will apply to all late submissions.

Assignment Overview

As a Talent Manager, you frequently face complex decisions that require balancing employee well-being, business needs, and ethical considerations. In this assignment, you will engage with a real-world talent management dilemma, analyse its implications, and make a reasoned decision.

You will also use ChatGPT to simulate conversations with different stakeholders to explore their perspectives before finalising your response.

Assignment Objectives

• Reflect on the role of AI in talent management decision-making.

Step 1: Choose One Dilemma

Select one of the following two talent management dilemmas to analyse.

Dilemma 1: High Performer vs. Team Morale

You are an HR manager at a mid-sized tech firm. One of your software engineers, Alex, is a high performer who consistently delivers excellent work. However, Alex is known to be difficult to work with—often dismissing colleagues’ ideas, being uncooperative in team projects, and causing friction in meetings. Several team members have expressed frustration, and one employee is considering leaving due to Alex’s behaviour.

Your decision:

1. Retain Alex and provide coaching to improve teamwork skills, despite ongoing friction.
2. Let Alex go to prioritise team morale, despite the loss of a high performer.

Dilemma 2: Skills-Based Hiring vs. Diversity & Inclusion

Your company is hiring for a leadership position in a high-stakes project. The final two candidates are:

• Candidate A: An experienced professional with a strong track record in similar roles.
• Candidate B: A less experienced candidate from an underrepresented background who shows strong potential and aligns with the company’s diversity and inclusion goals.

Your decision:

1. Hire Candidate A for immediate impact, prioritising technical expertise.
2. Hire Candidate B to foster long-term diversity and inclusion, despite the learning curve.

Step 2: Engage Stakeholder Perspectives Using ChatGPT

Before making your final decision, use ChatGPT to simulate conversations with different stakeholders who would be involved in this dilemma. This will help you understand their concerns and perspectives.

1. Engage ChatGPT as a Key Stakeholder
   • Ask ChatGPT to role-play as the following stakeholders:
     • A team member affected by the decision.
     • The HR Director overseeing company-wide talent strategy.
     • A senior executive concerned with business performance.
2. Conduct a Conversation with Each Role-Played Stakeholder
   • Ask questions such as:
     • “How do you feel about this situation?”
     • “What are your concerns about each possible decision?”
     • “What solutions would you propose?”
3. Document Key Insights
   • Identify patterns in the concerns raised.
   • Reflect on how stakeholder input influences your decision-making.

Step 3: Write Your Response (1,100–1,300 words)

   • Summarise key insights from each stakeholder role-play.
   • Discuss how different perspectives influenced your decision.
4. Your Decision & Justification (300–325 words) (30 marks)
   • Clearly state your final decision and justify it.
   • Consider ethical, strategic, and long-term implications.
5. Reflection on AI in Talent Management (150–175 words) (10 marks)
   • Reflect on how AI tools like ChatGPT can support talent management decisions.
   • Discuss any limitations or biases you noticed in AI-generated responses.

Appendix 1: Guidelines for Ethical Use of ChatGPT for Research

ChatGPT is a powerful language model developed by OpenAI. It can be a valuable tool for research assignments; however, it is important to use it ethically and responsibly. This guide provides you with instructions on how to utilise ChatGPT ethically for research purposes.

• Understand the limitations: ChatGPT may produce inaccurate or biased information, generate false statements, or lack current information. Cross-verify its information with reliable sources.
• Clearly state your research objectives: Define your goals and focus questions to ensure relevant and useful responses.
• Use ChatGPT as a supplementary resource: Combine AI-generated insights with peer-reviewed sources, books, and reputable websites.
• Cite ChatGPT as a source: Acknowledge it in footnotes and provide the conversation date. Refer to APA citation guide for ChatGPT.
