This unit provides students with an understanding of the definition and scope of entrepreneurship and an understanding of the enablers and barriers to business start-up.
Students will learn about the influence of national culture and economy on entrepreneurship and will explore the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs and the impact of personal situation factors, including education and background.
Students will also learn about the role and importance of small firms to the economy, and about social enterprise and the social economy. Students will also be expected to understand the balance of risk and reward in starting a new venture and they will investigate and reflect on their own entrepreneurial and enterprising characteristics. Examples of entrepreneurs and start-up organisations will be discussed and students will be expected to draw on local, personal and general knowledge together with their learning to be able to identify the characteristics of entrepreneurial ventures.
On successful completion of this unit a learner will:
The submission is in the form of a report. You are required to make effective use of headings, bullet points and subsections as appropriate. You are required to provide a reference list using the Harvard referencing system and provide citations throughout the report using the same referencing system. The recommended word limit is between 2000–2500 words for each part, although you will not be penalised for exceeding the total word limit.
You are currently employed as a Junior Business Executive for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, a UK Government Department that helps people to work and for businesses to invest, innovate and grow. In preparation for an upcoming seminar organised by the Department for helping businesses in times of Brexit uncertainties, you have been tasked by your manager to investigate different types of entrepreneurial ventures and their impact upon the economy.
Your line manager has asked you to produce a report that will be distributed to attendees at the end of the seminar. In writing this report, ensure that you provide your own list of UK Small and Medium Enterprises as examples of organisations that attended the seminar at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Following the impressive report that you submitted to your line manager from Assignment A, you have been promoted to the role of a Senior Business & Entrepreneurship Executive in the Department. Given your impressive performance at the seminar, one of the organisations that attended the seminar has asked your line manager for consultancy services. In relation to this, your line manager has asked you to prepare a report to cover the following:
Analyse the characteristic traits, skills and motivational drivers of successful entrepreneurs, that reflect their personality, supported by specific examples.
Critically analyse how background and experience influences entrepreneurs, both positively and negatively, by comparing and contrasting examples.
