Background

You must select one company from the list below and complete an analysis and evaluation of the chosen company’s competitive environment using and applying Porter’s Five Forces from the understanding the business environment concept covered in the module. You must also provide a critical evaluation of theories, models, concepts and literature. The analysis and evaluation must be supported with the use and application of academic and industry (grey) literature.

Task

You must produce a poster in a suitable academic format summarising your analysis and evaluation of the chosen company’s competitive environment using Porter’s Five Forces model, and critical evaluation of theories, models, concepts and literature. The poster must be produced to an academic standard using an appropriate format. The poster must be produced using Microsoft PowerPoint and accompanied by a 5 minutes recorded oral synopsis of the poster.

Aim

Your aim in completing this assessment is to provide in a poster format an analysis and critical evaluation of the chosen company’s competitive environment and critical evaluation of theories, models, concepts and critique of literature through the application of Porter’s Five Forces model.

Notes

  • The poster must be produced using Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Choose only one company from the list in this brief.
  • This is an individual assessment.
  • Relevant academic and industry-based (grey) literature must be used to develop your findings and solution(s), and this must be included and referenced correctly (using Harvard Referencing) in your presentation.   • The poster must provide depth to the critical analysis and evaluation.
  • No primary research can be conducted. All information must be obtained from secondary sources.
  • The 5 minutes recorded oral synopsis must contain both video and audio.
  • The poster and student must be clearly visible in the recording.

Academic or technical terms explained:

Academic literature: academic textbooks and journal articles. These can be sourced from MetSearch and Google Scholar for example.

Industry literature: Sometimes referred to as grey literature, i.e. non-academic sources e.g. credible sources such as websites, government/company reports, policy/strategy documents, marketing data, financial accounts etc.

Knowledge (recall) is just the ability to recall something
Comprehension (understand) means you understand knowledge. In practice this means you can explain the knowledge in terms of your existing learning and experience.
Application (use) means doing after being shown how or ability to apply abstract principles to particular known or novel situations
Analysis (breaking down) is breaking complex whole into parts, and then looking at the parts in some detail and identifying relationship or patterns
Synthesis (combine) is to combine facts or ideas to create new patterns or structures derived from the original data
Evaluation (judge) is to give the value of something, to state its strengths and weaknesses

  • Entrepreneurial: Much of the case material in this module will involve the application of entrepreneurial thinking and action. Key issues around creativity and innovation in shaping business strategy will be considered.
