Assessment of Learning: Teacher-marked
Analyzing a skill
You are three-quarters of the way through this course. This is an Assessment of Learning, which is used to evaluate your work based on established criteria and to assign a mark. Your teacher will provide you with feedback and a mark. This Assessment of Learning is worth 17% of your final mark for the course.
You will perform a qualitative analysis of a movement skill, describing the biomechanical principles, laws of physics, and joint mechanics involved. You will compare the abilities of two players, one who is an expert and one who is less experienced.

The quality and depth of your work should reflect the fact that this is a major assignment in a Grade 12 college-preparation course.
There are three tasks in this Assessment of Learning.
Task 1
Select a movement skill for analysis. The skill should be an isolated activity performed by one individual. Some examples include a golf swing, hockey shot, gymnastics move, throwing an object, swimming stroke, or diving. Do not use tennis as you’ve already analyzed this.
Obtain video footage of the skill being performed at two different skill levels. One should be an “expert” performing the skill while the other should be a less skilled person such as a beginner (”rookie”). You can either shoot the video footage yourself or find it on the Internet.
Task 2
1. Create a qualitative analysis in a slideshow format. Include both a slide and a commentary under the slide. The first slide should be the title slide.
2. Divide the skill into distinct phases. For each phase, make a slide describing the movement and the biomechanical principles involved in executing the manoeuvre.
3. In the next series of slides, explain what makes the expert performance so good in terms of positioning, movement, use of power, stability, and control in each of the phases. Be sure to make specific reference to the important anatomical structures, laws of physics, and biomechanical issues involved.
4. Describe the performance of the less skilled player. What did the athlete do incorrectly with respect to their biomechanics?
5. Suggest ways that the less skilled player can become more biomechanically correct and efficient while performing the specific movement skill. Be sure to use correct anatomical terminology and terms of movement that you have acquired over the course to date.
Task 3
Submit both your video footage and your slide presentation. Your video footage might be an actual expert and an actual rookie. If you did not create the video, you can send a link to the Internet where it can be found. If you created your own video, you need to upload it to a video filesharing site and then send the link to your teacher so they can view it. There are “Video upload instructions
(Opens in new window)
” available for download. Please note that without the links to your video, your teacher will be unable to mark this assignment and will return it to you as Incomplete.
To create your slides, use a presentation software program such as Microsoft Office PowerPoint. You should have a minimum of 20 slides with commentary.
Feedback and marking
You will receive three kinds of feedback:
1. Your teacher will highlight the phrases on the rubric that best describe your assignment to show you how you have done.
2. Your teacher will also provide you with detailed comments about the strengths of your assignment, the areas of the assignment that need improvement, and the steps you should take before submitting another assignment like this one.
3. The final piece of feedback that you will receive will be your mark. Each of the four categories of knowledge and skills is weighted equally at
