Cultural history methodology

Cultural history methodology is among the methods used to understand art in history. To become familiar with cultural history is to use all relevant sources of information to place the artist and/or the work of art in the context of the cultures which produced them. One considers many elements produced by culture. For purposes of the reading response, cultural history here specifically examines documentary evidence. The goal of this assignment is to examine and evaluate the methods used to study ancient cultures. DIRECTIONS: Compose a 2-3 page response to the Week 6 Article, “Mode and Model in the Flavian Female Portrait ” Your paper should include two components: a Summary and a Critique. Summary: Your summary should identify the topic of the article, explain the main idea/argument, and the types of evidence used to support the main idea. Critique: Your critique should evaluate the content of the article. We remain in the “Historical Period,” meaning scholars can consult written documents of ancient cultures. Therefore, proposed hypotheses continue to have more substantial supporting evidence. In your critique, explore the methods the author uses in order to prove his/her point (also think about how the shift from prehistoric to historic affects the author’s claim). Consider the validity of the proposed hypothesis- is it convincing and what are its strengths and weaknesses. Also identify any assumptions and implications that are made throughout the article, as well as the author’s intent, attitude, tone and bias. Reviewing the content with a critical eye establishes the foundation of a strong critique. You may refer to course content, lectures/presentations, as well as the textbook within your response. Include citations in CMS format for references to any readings, lectures/presentations, and any specific art works mentioned within your response. REQUIREMENTS: Citation style: The paper must be written in correct Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) formatting as stipulated in the Liberal Arts Writing Guide for formatting, citations, and style. Specific works of art referenced within the paper need to be included with appropriate CMS image labels, credit lines, and in-text figure references. Ideas, concepts and specific quotes from the readings, textbook, lectures/presentation, and any outside resources must be cited. Essay style: paper must be organized and include an introduction, thesis statement, supporting arguments and a conclusion and written in complete Standard English sentences. Length: approximately 2 to 3 pages of text.
