Sexual assault refers to unintentional and forced sexual engagement without one party’s consent. The victim is always the one whose right has been violated without their consent.
In most cases, women are the victims of sexual assault in colleges. According to the provisions of the law, sexual assault is unlawful, and anyone guilty of the offense should be convicted in the court of law.
Statistics indicate that approximately 10-16% of the women have experienced sexual assault or attempted rate since they started college. The National Crime Victimization Survey reported that approximately 1,000 college women report sexual assault cases (Morabito et al., 2017).
Further investigations have revealed that alcohol and drug abuse is one of the causes of sexual assault among college students.
Some cases have involved college students who engage in the sex trade. Some external socioeconomic factors, such as poverty, are also attributable to the increase in the cases of sexual assault. This research question will try to determine whether socioeconomic factors influence a person’s likelihood to carry out sexual assault in college.
Klein, Helmken, Rizzo, and Woofter (2018) studied the role of alcohol in campus sexual assault. By using a sample of more than 200 campus students, most of the interviewed respondents reported that focusing on the victim’s use of alcohol is neither practical nor efficient.
The research further noted that most of the consensual sexual cases on campuses were caused by the influence of alcohol (Klein et al., 2018). One of the limitations that the research encountered is the students’ inability to confess that most of the victims are drug addicts of alcohol users. In the socioeconomic environment, people have different characters. Some students cannot do without taking alcohol while in school.
They will have to find it with all means possible. If such a student engages in sexual assault, alcohol may not be a first course of the assault; however, investigators will consider the victim’s mental state in terms of alcohol content.
According to the study carried out by Orchowski et al. (2018) on their study on the prevention of sexual assault for heavy drinking, college men found that alcohol addicts are more likely to engage in sexual assault. Psychiatrists argue that alcohol is likely to influence an individual’s reasoning.
Some people are likely to experience hallucinations, which can lead them to sexual assault and other harmful experiences.
The study further found that heavy drinking college men are more likely to engage in sexual assault than those who are not drinking. The findings showed that those who are heavy drunkards should be prevented from some areas in college.
According to Hadwin (2017), a significant number of victims tend to blame the effects of the third person, such as revenge porn. By using a sample size of more than 300 college students, a significant number of respondents reported that watching porn is one of the causes of sexual assault.
Those who are addicted to porn are more likely to carry out sexual assault. Today, technology enables people to access any content online. These online content are some of the causes of socioeconomics effects that contribute to the high level of sexual assault among college students.
The research question will be answered using a quantitative data collection method. Creswell (2009) suggsts that reserch questions can be framed in different ways to explore the quantitative and qualitative information (Creswell & Zhang, 2009). In this case, the resech question may be framed as; Is there a relationship between socioeconomic factors and individual’s likelihood to engage in sexual assault in college?
