| Unit level | 5 |
| Credit value | 15 |
The ability to lead and manage effectively is highly sought after by industry, as employers seek to produce and develop managers who can motivate, enthuse and build respect throughout their workforce. The hard and soft skills required by leaders and managers are frequently highlighted by employers as skills gaps in recruitment. Developing these skills will help students to meet career aspirations in leadership and management.
The aim of this unit is to help students to understand the difference between the function of a manager and the role of a leader. Students will consider the characteristics, behaviours and traits that support effective management and leadership. Students will learn about the theories that have shaped the understanding of leadership and management and how these have provided a guide to action for managers and leaders who want to secure success for their businesses. Students will look at leadership styles, how and why they are used and the extent to which they are effective.
This unit also gives students an understanding of motivational strategies. They will develop motivational strategies covering intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of motivation. Finally, students will evaluate the importance of managing performance in achieving continuous improvement.
There are a number of texts
related to this unit to be found in the VLE / LMS. Handouts and briefing sheets will be provided in the individual session where appropriate and these along with other links to the relevant unit information will be posted on Moodle which is the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you can refer to the course material under each unit.
The learners will also be asked to register on the Pearson HN Global platform www.highernationals.com from where you will also be able to access additional study resources for the unit.
The submission format is in the form of a case study report. The report should be written in a concise style. You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs, and sub- sections as appropriate. All work must be supported with research and referenced using the Harvard referencing system (or an alternative system). You will need to provide a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system (or an alternative system). Inaccurate use of referencing may lead to issues of plagiarism if not applied correctly.
The recommended word limit is 2,000—2,500 words, although you will not be penalised for going under or exceeding the total word limit.
As level 4 student it is expected that appropriate academic sources are drawn upon. After all this is why you are undertaking a higher education programme of study. Wikipedia and Google are quick sources of information but are not credible sources of academic literature. The rule of the thumb here is if the website has no author, then do not cite unsubstantiated web articles. The same applied to the use of A Level text books. Of course, articles can be downloaded from the web and are perfectly acceptable sources of information. For instance, Home Office Statistics and information from government bodies, alongside academic papers downloaded from Google
Scholar can be used. In this instance Website references should insert the author and date (the full reference appears at the end of the document). Get into this habit now and it will benefit you in the future as well.
Students must submit and complete work that is their own. Plagiarism is presenting the thoughts, ideas and words of another person, as if they were your own. Collusion may occur when students assignments are very similar (and in some cases, identical) to that of another fellow student. This also amongst to plagiarism. Plagiarism is taken very seriously and the students are strongly recommended to refer to the Academic Misconduct Policy which is available on Moodle / VLE.
