Assignment 2 Outcomes:

Students should be able to integrate written reports (poster presentation) and verbal presentations on there lated essential management topics, construction manager’s skills, attributes, roles and responsibilities at the managerial level, site planning and method statement (human resource, material, and plant management), motivation theory approaches, project controlling and current software in construction project management for the relevant case study of actual project implementation (CLO3/PL06).

Project Proposal

The Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) Expansion Project is a government-led initiative aimed at enhancing the capacity and facilities of Malaysia’s second busiest airport. With an investment of RM442.3 million, the project was approved in November 2024 and is set to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with completion targeted for 2028. The expansion includes extending the international terminal to accommodate increasing passenger traffic, constructing new aircraft bays to reduce congestion, and developing a multi-level car park to improve accessibility. Additionally, the project will incorporate smart airport technologies, such as automated check-in and baggage handling systems, while also prioritising energy-efficient infrastructure to support sustainability efforts.

The expansion is expected to boost tourism and economic growth, as KKIA serves as a major gateway to Sabah, a renowned destination for eco-tourism, diving, and adventure travel. By increasing passenger capacity and enhancing regional connectivity, the project aims to attract more international visitors and strengthen Malaysia’s aviation network within ASEAN. Furthermore, the improved cargo handling facilities will benefit Sabah’s key industries, including seafood, palm oil, and timber exports. However, the project also presents challenges, such as minimising environmental impact, ensuring smooth airport operations during construction, and managing budget allocations to meet deadlines. Despite these hurdles, the expansion is a crucial step toward strengthening Malaysia’s aviation sector, enhancing travel experiences, and supporting long-term economic development in East Malaysia.
